The Adeyemi family thought they had it all figured out. Bola, a marketing executive, and her husband Femi, an IT specialist, were climbing the corporate ladder in Lagos. Their two children, Tomi (10) and Dara (7), attended a prestigious school in the city. From the outside, they were living the Lagos dream.
But behind closed doors, it was a different story.
“We were always rushing,” Bola recalls, her eyes distant as she remembers their life in Lagos. “Rush to beat the traffic, rush to get the kids to school, rush to make it to meetings. It felt like we were on a never-ending treadmill.”
Femi nods in agreement. “I was leaving home before the kids woke up and returning after they were asleep. I barely knew my own children.”
The breaking point came during a rare family dinner. Tomi, their usually chatty 10-year-old, randomly said “You guys don’t love me. Nobody loves me”.
That was the moment the Adeyemis realized something had to change. The idea of leaving came gradually. A colleague mentioned cheaper housing in Ogun. A cousin raved about shorter commutes. Soon, they found themselves researching.
The decision wasn’t easy, but the Adeyemis took the plunge six months ago. They bought a 500sqm plot in Ogun state and built their dream home.
Today, their life looks dramatically different.
“I wake up to the sound of birds, not blaring horns,” Bola laughs. “My commute is shorter, which means I get to have breakfast with my family every day.”
Femi, who now works remotely three days a week, has rediscovered the joy of parenting. “I’m teaching Tomi how to ride a bike. In Lagos, I wouldn’t have dreamed of letting him cycle on the streets. Here, it’s safe and open.”
The children are doing well too. Dara has joined a local dance group, while Tomi is excelling in his new school. “They’re happier, more relaxed,” Bola observes. “We all are.”
The Adeyemis haven’t just found a new home; they’ve found a new way of life. The reliable electricity means no more disruptions to work or study. The 24/7 security allows them to feel safe and at peace. The well-planned roads mean less time commuting and more time living.
